Églomisé is a rare type of art that involves reverse painting, engraving, glazing, and gilding on glass panels. The work is applied on the non-viewing side so that the final piece has a clean glass finish when displayed. This unique art form gets it's name from the 18th century artist and framer Jean Baptiste Glomy (verre - glass, églomisé - Glomy) who resurrected the technique in his personal practice. Although he's credited with its most recent revival, it's actually an ancient form of art that dates back to the 3rd century BC. The popularity of églomisé has risen and fallen several times throughout history which has kept it somewhat in obscurity. While it seems like there is interest building, églomisé is still considered an unusual and very niche type of art.

JMD is one of a very limited number of studios and artists who do églomisé, and we are gaining a reputation for our proficiency in the craft. Our clients have come to know us for our "antique mirror" finish, but we are always pressing the boundaries of what we can do. We've worked on sizes ranging from miniature to gargantuan, in styles stretching from the past to the present, all while we pioneer the future of this very special art form.

Églomisé is notoriously difficult to capture on film due to the glossy nature of glass and reflective quality of the silver and gold leaf. Any attempt to confine its expression to a photo or video will lose some of its essence; we feel it is truly one of the most dynamic forms of art there is. In the digital age, when everything is reduced to photos and videos on the internet, églomisé remains a standalone phenomenon requiring a physical, first-hand viewing to really experience it.  It's interactive, it's full of life, and new details emerge at every angle. We have done our best to share with you here some of our work, but if you desire to see it in person, contact us here to arrange a visit to our studio or the purchase and shipment of a sample.
